NEXT CLASS: August 3-4, 2023
2 FULL DAYS // ONLINE LIVE INSTRUCTOR-LED
This course is eligible for 16 NETA Continuing Technical Development Credits (CTDs).
NETA Certified Technicians are required to earn a minimum of 24-48 CTDs every three years (Level 2 Technicians must earn 24 CTDs, Levels 3 and 4 must earn 48 CTDs) to maintain their certification.
Tom Sandri is an industry veteran of 30+ years. Tom spent many years in the field at Philadelphia Electric. You can still find remnants of Tom's first stint at Protec on Youtube. He spent the next 10 years at Shermco Industries, helping to build their training services department while developing internal and external SCORM-compliant online training modules. Tom still found time to do on-site training. Now back at Protec, Tom has built a large portfolio of training offerings that include:

Medium-voltage (MV) power cables are the backbone of the power distribution systems developed over two hundred years. Currently, 2.3 million miles of MV cables are installed in the USA, most with extruded insulation. Diagnostic testing technologies can differentiate MV cables by their operational condition and aging process prior to faults, thereby providing guidance for proactive maintenance and asset management.
This course reviews popular MV cable diagnostic technologies, explains why the partial discharge (PD) test is an effective tool to diagnose MV cables, and summarizes typical PD test sensors used in onsite MV cable diagnosis. Interpreting data from onsite PD tests is also discussed because data interpretation is critical to achieving the expected advantages of PD tests.

Day 1 - 8:00am - 4:00pm CST (15-minute morning and afternoon breaks + 1 hour lunch break)
Day 2 - 8:00am - 4:00pm CST (15-minute morning and afternoon breaks + 1 hour lunch break)
This course requires a working knowledge of electrical theory, electrical distribution systems, circuit calculations and print reading. The following prerequisites should be completed prior to enrollment in this course:
In the beginning of this course, you will learn the background on cable installations and the movement to extruded insulation for medium voltage cables. You will learn how diagnostic testing technologies can differentiate MV cables by their operational condition and aging process prior to faults, thereby providing guidance for proactive maintenance and asset management.
We will review the basic construction of a medium volage cable and develop an understanding of the function of each cable component. Learners will build an understanding of basic cable design and the selection criteria for various insulation and shielding systems.
Students will be introduced to various cable aging characteristics and causes for deterioration. Combined with the knowledge obtained in medium voltage cable construction, the learner will be able to review diagnostic data, environmental and operational conditions and perform root-cause analysis.
We will review industry standards and best practice recommendations regarding cable diagnostics and testing options. The learner will develop a strong understanding of the intended purpose of each test and be able to make testing recommendations based on cable system design, cable age and condition.
Students will be introduced to both IEEE and IEC standards associated with Partial Discharge and PD testing. Based on the industry standards, you will understand the measurement process and data analysis involved in partial discharge testing.
We will review the types of partial discharge, causes and detection methods. The learner will become familiar with Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge Patterns and partial discharge data interpretation.
You will be introduced to various partial discharge detection strategies including: 50/60 Hz PD detection, VLF Sine-wave PD detection, VLF Cosine-rectangular PD detection, and Damped Alternating Current (DAC) PD detection. You will be able to explain the benefits and limitations of each technique and be able to render informed decisions and recommendations.

During the lab exercise, the learner will demonstrate their knowledge of data analysis and report generation.
